The form of the film takes on many international characteristics typical to action genres, such as low dim lighting, quick scene changes, short takes, racy music, and wobbly/jarring camera movements. The style of cinemetography used can be seenin films from all over the world. It is very effective for portraying intense emotion during high action scenes. Another global aspect of this film is the subjects of the stories. These themes are seen and experienced all over the world. From violent acts, to deceptive relationships, and disasterous events; they are all common themes used in films. They are also themes that take place in real life and can be relatable by the audiences, although these specific scenarios might be extreme, the general ideas are very global. The importance of animals and pets in people's lives is also a concept accepted globally. In these stories, the pets play significant roles in the lives of the people, whether they are used for comfort, financial gains, or family and love. A more local aspect of the movie is the illustration of the different classes in Mexico. The story of Ramiro, Susana, and Octavio represent the lower classes while the story of Daniel and Valeria represent the upper classes of Mexico. The third story of El Chivo, however, eximplifies how the two classes intertwine with eachother.
Overall, this was an intense and action-packed film. There is almost too much blood, gore, and violence. The plots will keep the viewers at the edge of their seat, and the connections of the fates of the characters throughout the film keep the audience guessing. The extremity of the scenarios will cause emotions to soar. This film could be very exciting and appealing to audiences.
Good and accurate summary of the film. I like how you mentioned that the animal/pet in the movie played a larger role than just participating in dog fights. I think that the dogs resembled the characters in the film in which the people too have to struggle to survive in the streets of mexico.
ReplyDeleteSolid analysis
You did a great job summarizing the plot of the film and touching on the cinematographic elements of it as well.I agree with your observations about that style of the films such as the camera movements and fast paced action. Your analysis on the mesh of local and global themes in the film supports your argument as well.
ReplyDeleteI agree that most of the aspects of the film are very global especially the story. I think the director did a great job of using low key lighting to make the scenes with Octavio and Susana appear to be dark and unmoral. The use of pets in the film was very interesting. In some cases, the pets seemed to be a reflection of their owners.
ReplyDeleteI really like your point about how each character represents some aspect of the social hierarchy. This is a great point and gives the movie a meaning behind all the blood and gore. I do disagree however that the idea of classes is a local theme. Classes are present throughout every country whether its a world power like America or a third world country like South Africa. There are always people who believe that others are not good enough for them and will only associate with those they consider of their own "class". Besides that I agree whole-heartedly with the rest of the review. This movie is just like action movies all around the world.
ReplyDeleteI liked how you mentioned many of the key points about the overall theme of the movie. The point made about the classes and how each individual character represented a class was nice. You could have gotten more into depth about why these class differences were shown? It might be that though there's a difference in the classes, everyone is the same in the end.
ReplyDeleteGood review. This film reminded me of Crash, but with a lot more blood. I didn't notice how El Chivo's story pulled together the two classes until you mentioned it, but that's a very good point.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Priya; the El Chivo story is crucial to the movie and how it tackles local issues. This is a very good review with just the right combination of summary and opinion. I feel like the stories behind the various dogs could have been expanded on; they are as important as the humans in the narrative of the movie.
